WWBA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS & GRANTS Since its inception, the Foundation has given scholarships and grants to other organizations that provide services and opportunities meeting various aspects of the Foundation’s goals and to people who promote these same ideals. Annually, the Foundation gives the Justice Sondra Miller Scholarship, named in honor of a founding member and past President, to assist a Pace Law School student who has demonstrated dedication to issues affecting women and an ability to overcome adversity. In 2008 the Foundation gave two scholarships of $2,500 each to Lisa M. Denig and Barbara J. Durkin. The Foundation created and funded an annual grant to a New Rochelle High School student for excellence in social studies, an award named in memory of a founding member of the WWBA, Cherry Krassner, who was a New Rochelle resident. The Foundation sponsors the Women's Hall of Fame luncheon in Westchester by giving a grant to the Women's Research and Education Fund. In 2007 the Foundation made a $10,000 grant to John Jay Legal Services Equal Justice America Disability Clinic which is run by Pace Law School. The Clinic assists disabled persons to obtain government benefits and other planning tools available to disabled persons and their families; the grant contributed to summer internship stipends for law school students who worked under the supervision of a faculty advisor. The Foundation has also given annual grants to various organizations which provide shelter and legal services to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse: My Sister's Place (which operates a shelter and provides legal services), the Pace Women’s Justice Center (which represents victims of domestic violence in Family Court, Student Advocacy, and GEMS (a program at the YWCA of White Plans which helps prepare minority children for college). |
